This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. But I have to. Knecht remains in the Castalian community where he learns and rises and ultimately is accepted into the highest reaches of its hierarchy. Does that make sense?

Two drafts of a fourth life were published inthe second version being recast in the first person and breaking off earlier. When I started reading this book, I remember I was very excited – it was about some game and I do so love games!
The idea underlying them always remained sacred to him, but he had recognized the particular forms that idea had assumed as mutable perishable, in need of criticism. The stories are presented as exercises by Knecht imagining his life had he been born in another time and place.

Without using fancy language and going on about scholarship, virtue, the aristocracy of intellect, and so on, as his schoolteachers were prone to do, this serene, friendly man had something in his maner and his speech that imposed an obligation and brought out your good, chivalric, higher aspirations and forces.
I think it was a mistake giving that as the title to the translated work. I’m just not sure if the structure worked for me. Thus the bulk of former elite pupils find their ultimate destiny as schoolmasters. It begins with a long introductory chapter about Castalia and its history before proceeding for most of the length of the book with the biography of Knecht. Reading the blurb of this book, my first by Hesse, I was immediately fascinated and felt compelled to read it.
The glass bead game unless I missed something never seems to be played in epic battle proportions as described in this book, its never openly laid out other than just the basic idea.
But not everyone can spend his entire life breathing, eating, and drinking nothing of abstractions.
Castilians are also taught meditation; and the book combines both Eastern and Western wisdom. In honoring him in its Award Ceremony Speech, the Swedish Academy said that the novel “occupies a special position” in Hesse’s work. Apparently, Hesse intended to explore several different lives of the same person as he is reincarnated. They might be valued at a distance and called on in emergencies, but others neither love them nor accept them, rather give them a wide bearth.
For a moment he was utterly dispensable, exempt from all responsibilities, not required to perform any tasks, to do any thinking. The time allotted to his tenure as Magister Ludi is short and the sense of Joseph Knecht struggling with his role so that his abnegation follows logically does not really emerge: Hesse is not a science fiction writer, and it was not his intention to create one.
